- Cost: No cost at all. Just draw two columns on paper. One column lists the benefits that go to you from this marriage — you can calculate those using the earlier sections. The other column lists the benefits that go to your elders: peace of mind, social prestige, and an end to pressure to marry. The hard part is keeping the elders’ column separate and not merging it with yours.
- In plain terms: The benefits your elders gain — peace of mind, social standing, and relief from marriage pressure — are very real. But they won’t automatically translate into better health outcomes or improved relationship quality for you. Meanwhile, the time costs, financial outlays, and exit costs all fall squarely on your shoulders. By drawing two columns on paper and assigning each benefit to the right party, you can instantly see whether this arrangement is worth it for you.
- Benefit: The benefits your elders receive are genuine. Yet they do not automatically become gains in your own health (see Section 8) or relationship quality (see Section 4; how good your relationship is depends on your own feelings). All time costs (Section 9), financial expenses (Sections 10–12), and exit costs (Section 15) must be borne by you. Once you keep separate records, you can easily judge whether marrying “as a duty” offers any real value for you.

- Notes: You may also treat the elders’ share of benefits as a major factor in your calculations; how you weigh it is entirely up to you. A fill‑in worksheet is available at docs/结婚划不划算.md.
Make a separate tally for the benefits to your elders when they get married — don’t mix it with your own records
